It's Flu Season

Why do we call this time of year "Flu Season"? We assume it is due to kids being back in school and the fact that fall and winter seem to bring with them illnesses.

Well it has very little to do with the kids going back to school and nothing to do with fall and winter starting. Here is what is causing the "Flu Season". Pull out your calendar. Starting in October and running every month until April what do we have? You guessed it right if you said SUGAR. I call this time of year "Sugar Season".

It starts in October with Halloween, November - Thanksgiving, December - Christmas, January - New Years, February - Valentine's Day, March - St. Patrick's Day and April - Easter. And what do all these holidays have in common? Again, you guessed it - SUGAR. That food that we love so much but does so much damage to our health.

The sugar is in the form of desserts, candies, cakes, cookies, ice cream, pies, hot chocolate, soda, you name it.

The problem is sugar suppresses the immune system making us vulnerable to colds and the flu. In addition to that sugar causes inflammation, depression (that's one of the reasons why people get depressed during the winter) and slows down the function of the adrenal glands. And what do the adrenal glands do you ask? They help you deal with stress and provide energy and what do we have a lot of in the winter - yep you guessed it stress and fatigue.

Now you have a clearer understanding of why we get the "Flu".

When you dive into your kids candy from Halloween, think about it and say to yourself - "I just shot my immune system by eating this sugar." It makes you think twice about putting that sweet stuff in your mouth.

If you, a family member, a friend or a co-worker are having trouble kicking the sugar addiction, call The Health Improvement Center at 703.242.7474. See what we may find that is causing your sugar addiction so you and your family do not come down with the "sugar blues"!
